Government Roundtable Briefing with Alfresco, AWS & Zaizi

The Government Roundtable powered by Alfresco, AWS & Zaizi, which took place in London on 23 June 2017 brought together top CEOs, Directors and Business Managers from across the Public Sector. At the top of the agenda was how to drive strategic digital transformation within your organisation.
 
To help kick off the discussions, Jeff Nott from Alfresco gave insight to case studies of customers who are using both AWS and Alfresco to achieve real savings. 
 
The US Navy replaced 20 different tasking and records management solutions. This solution gives leaders and personnel enterprise wide visibility into the status of each tasker, along with associated content and records. The Department of the Navy will save as much as $16.7M and 4.3 million man hours in the first year alone with a consolidated enterprise task management solution based on the Alfresco Platform. Plus, another $25.8M in savings is projected from moving data storage to AWS.
 
A regulatory organization has built a powerful, highly scalable solution that combines Alfresco Content Services, Amazon Web Services and sophisticated analytics technologies.
 
The solution unlocks information that helps regulators protect the integrity of the financial markets.
 
The next session was ‘Putting Tech at the Heart of Government’ by Sue Daley, Head of Programme for Cloud, Data, Analytics and AI, TechUK. 
 
Sue Daley shared that there are massive opportunities for digital transformation, but it requires the Government to be brave and embrace transformation. However, for it to be fully effective there needs to be a ‘Digital by Default’ Public Sector culture that’s open to digital change.
 
This was supported by an update by Yvonne Gallagher, Director of Digital Value for Money, National Audit Office. Yvonne talked about the recent NAO report on Government Digital Transformation which covers progress made over the last 5 years. 
 
Presently there’s a big drive to digitise public services in the UK and the focus is on data analytics, cloud and platforms. However, it’s important that strategic challenges such as skills shortages must be addressed before successful transformation can take place. It requires not just technical skills but also leaders that can understand business models and deliver organisational and cultural change. 

Yvonne summarised the top 3 challenges to be addressed:

  • Understanding leadership needs.
  • Understanding government’s role in standards.
  • Building digital skills at pace.

Roundtable Open Discussion Session (Moderated by Sue Daley)

The main topics discussed were:
  • The digital skills gap and solutions to solving it such as taking a long-term view i.e. running apprenticeships or training ex-military personnel such as AWS re:Start Program.

  • How to cope with the impending GDPR regulations and confusion over what it really means: how it would be more practical to give weight to sharing best practice and educating organisations on how to be compliant rather than scaremongering.

  • Brexit being a roadblock to deploying digital transformation due to the pressure, uncertainty and the need to design new systems by 2020.

  • Lastly, having a data strategy is key. It sits at the heart of digital transformation. It is important to know your strategy, your processes, where your data is stored, how your data is shared and with whom.


The event concluded with a summary from George Parapadakis from Alfresco: Digital transformation is more than just a concept, it is a practice. It goes beyond the user experience. It’s about systems, services and skills and how well back end systems are simplified. And, of course, people want speed: consequently, developing an agile environment is essential to the success of a project.

All in all, it was a great morning, with plenty to think about.
